Writing
Writing was a very important thing for the Ancient Greeks. The Ancient Greek alphabet consisted of 24 letters. Alpha was the first letter, and Omega was the last. The Greeks created the alphabet by adapting it from the Phoenician alphabet. Some of the earliest Greek writing was found as graffiti. Even though the alphabet is only used in the Greek language, it's still the root of many other words in other languages as well.

The Greek author, Sappho.
One of the main purposes of writing in Ancient Greece was poetry. There were two main genres of poetry, epic and lyric. Then, lyric poetry was split into four more genres. The four types of lyric poetry are elegiac, iambic, choral, and monodic. The earliest found examples of epic poetry are the Iliad and the Odyssey, which were both written by Homer. Lyric poetry got its name because it would originally be sung by a group of people with a lyre. The most famous Lyric poet was Sappho, who was as respected as Homer. Her only poem that has survived to this day in its original, completed form is Ode to Aphrodite. Lots of Greek poetry are still famous to this day.
